Another pillaged topic verbatim

This is the Role Playing workshop. Designed to help you become a better RPer.

In this topic we will cover:
Role Playing basics.
Role Playing Styles.
Grammar your friend.
Do's and Don't's.
Power Plays.
God Mode. The basics of Role Playing are pretty simple. Choose a character and guide them through a series of challenges in a fun (http://www.sonikku.com/forums/How-to-Role-Play-with-ease-t53009.html#) manner using Grammar and actions to help you. Role Playing isn't just guiding a character though, it's an art. You must make it flow like an author (http://www.sonikku.com/forums/How-to-Role-Play-with-ease-t53009.html#) does with words. It's literature.

To Role Play like a King/Queen you must first understand how to Role Play in many different styles. The common, "Script Style" as it's called is an easy one to become friends with.

Ex. 1
Link: I'll defeat you yet Gannon! *Strikes a heroic pose*
Gannon: Not if I have anything to say about it! *Tosses a bag of cotton at Link*
Link: Ow! I'm dying!

Second style is Story book (http://www.sonikku.com/forums/How-to-Role-Play-with-ease-t53009.html#) style. Something like what you may read in a regular novel. This one can be challenging to some Role Players, because it requires you to use good grammar and to think things through.

Ex. 2
Alex ran past the guards and his coat made a whisping noise as he did so. A guard turned around and gasped, "What was that?" They turned around and walked toward Alex and where he was hiding. They looked into the shadows and couldn't see a thing. "Huh, must have been nothing..." The other guard dumbfoundedly exclaimed. They turned their backs to continue their rounds and Alex stood up quietly removing a combat knife from his boot, he prepped it for combat.

Both of these are well known styles of Role Playing and both of them need good grammar, however, the Novel Style is a prefered style for Forums (and the Elite). The novel style requires a usage of, "said" and other such speech verbs. Which can become dull after a while when the RPer uses just said. Always pay attention in English class as well. That usually helps with Role Playing. Spell Check is also helpful.

Power Playing can be difficult. Now you may ask, "What is Power Playing?" Power playing is when you pull off some sort of silly or crafty trick against your opponent in an RP, or do something brilliant. It is also known as, "meta-game thinking". Say for instance you are in a battle against a spell caster. You're in a forest and your character is armed with a Kitana. You're hiding behind a tree and they're trying to find you. A smart move would not to jump out in the open and expose yourself. A good plan may be to use the environment (http://www.sonikku.com/forums/How-to-Role-Play-with-ease-t53009.html#) against them. Cut down a tree and kick it on to them if. They'll be caught off guard allowing you to choose where it hits. You'd want to avoid killing them otherwise you'd be God Moding. So instead crush a body part. Like their hand that would stop them from being able to cast spells if they use hand motions to cast them. Think about how they battle and what your environment could do for you. Think about what you know and what your opponent knows in the topic and then what you know about them outside of the topic.

God modding: How to deal with it and when to use it.

God Modding isn't a fun thing to deal with and we've all dealt with it. People God Mode, because they can't find a way to defeat their opponent with class or like to be thought of as a winner. To deal with a God Moder, put into use the Power playing. It's meant to overwhelm the God Moder and make them leave the RP with out having to ask them. However, if you don't feel the need to humiliate them kindly ask them to leave the topic, if problems persist--they can have a nice juicy warning from me when you report them =D. God Moders often see what they are doing as something epic and grand, nevertheless they're doing something they shouldn't, unless that is that you the author of the topic say it's okay for them to do such. As long as it is for plot reasons, otherwise there is no need.
