Prologue

Everything is peaceful again. I feel…whole. Complete. Content

Somewhat

That was the stream of awareness that flowed through the mind of Miles "Tails" Prower as soon as his large blue eyes opened. The orange-yellow Mobius fox stared up at the ceiling within a small but cozy bedroom. Prower however, was no ordinary fox. Lying haphazardly on the floor on his side of the bed was a pile of metal. Put together it composed a Kevlar-Titanium armor suit, from the waist up. His legs were completely robotic.

But the rest of him wasn’t, somewhat.

Miles was a cyborg. The second to successfully live for over a year. The first for the planet Mobius. He was a police cyborg, patched together by the whim of the multisystem Omni Conusmer Products Corporation, brought in as a limbless mass of fur, flesh and blood, shot to pieces by his best friend turned traitor, Sonic the Hedgehog. He was betrayeda gain by OCP, forced to live in servitude as the mindless mechanical zombie Cy-Fox, while his inner self was locked away by line after line of computer code.

But he had fought and now everything was coming back. Turning around for him. He had won an internal struggle over control of his fate and body. But he had half-lost the struggle for the family that he once had. His wife had to abandon all hope of him ever being able to come back to her arms. His son had to abandon all hope of him coming back to be the father that the young kit had lost.

But he still had a family. A surrogate family. One member of it shuddered and turned on their side, facing his back. He felt a warm hand touch the back of his metal half-skull. He could hear a sigh.

Maria.

Maria Rebecca Robotnik. 28 years old. Once dead like him, but she did not have to become a machine to live again. He ensured that. They had known each other when they were both 14 until Maria was murdered under the color of authority when she was 16. She was the granddaughter of the famed biologist Professor Gerald Robotnik. Back then, Maria was very ill, stricken with a biological weapon that was created by the same faction that ultimately killed her, G.U.N. The weapon was an autoimmune disease called NIDS. It was more potent and extensive than its naturally occurring cousin, AIDS.

But that could not stop a Tails from the year 2027. He had hijacked G.U.N’s own experimental time distortion device on its first test run, and used his superior firepower and defenses against the G.U.N of the past. An agent of the G.U.N of 2027 was sent after him to prevent him from saving Maria and the ARK. The agent was a cyborg like Tails, but was corrupted by a year of agony and control by OCP and G.U.N, as well as his own psychotic mind. The agent even originally came from the ARK.

It was Shadow the Hedgehog. Once tasked with Maria’s protection, turned into the new master of the leaderless NUKE cult from 2001. A fallen angel now redeemed by paradox. Since Tails had saved Maria, Shadow did not have to evacuate the ARK. Therefore he did not reintroduce the NUKE drug. He did not come under the scope of OCP’s RoboCop 5 project. Time had changed.

Yet some things didn’t. Sonic still killed Tails. There was a ‘gap’ in the new timeline, ‘normal’ activity between the years 2026 and 2027 replacing what happened in the old one. No rampaging RoboCop 5. No G.U.N. Just two years on the streets of Station Square with Maria at Tails’ side. In the old timeline, Maria’s explanation for their bond would have been that it was because Tails saved her life. Now it was a mutual attraction, unacted upon since they were younger, until now.

Tails rolled on his other side to look at Maria. She was very cute, even at 27. Long blond hair, light blue eyes which contrasted perfectly to his own deep, dark blue ones. Thin and attractive, she was wearing a light blue one-piece dress, similar to the one she wore on the ARK. Tails smiled as he surveyed the goddess laying before him. Attractive and also very smart.

Maria was a computer systems engineer and research associate for the Cyberdyne Systems Corporation. Cyberdyne was a new corporation to Mobius, gaining major ground on the decaying Omni Consumer Products Corporation on Earth, as well as on Mobius. It was originally a child corporation of OCP, starting up with only two engineers and OCP loan money. Now OCP was borrowing money from them. Cyberdyne was also a major defense contractor of the United Systems Ground-Aerospace Defense Command, a joint military trust of Earth and Mobius forces, going far beyond the expectations of this predecessor, the earth based NORAD of old times. GADC’s current worries were over the pending return of the Black Arms, an intelligent race of aliens that had given Professor Gerald Robotnik the material necessary to complete Shadow. The Black Arms were intent on taking over both planets and potentially the known universe by capturing the Chaos Emeralds. And Cyberdyne won the contract to create an automated defense network to combat the alien threat.

The system wasn’t new at all. Portions of the concept were declassified and released to the general media. Cyberdyne was pulling its military-grade artificial intelligence project Skynet, out of the mothballs after 30 years of work. Skynet was originally meant to go online to protect the Earth-bound United States against their enemies, but was sabotaged by expert terrorists with a supervirus that forced Cyberdyne to isolate the entire project to start work on curing the afflicted A.I. Cyberdyne engineers were back on schedule for finding a cure after Maria was hired by Cyberdyne a year ago, after her predecessor was found out to be a terrorist mole, destroying precious data. If Maria and her team successfully cured Skynet, they could adjust Skynet and update its 30 year old mission from the role of a nation-bound miser to protecting planets. Peace would reign supreme, being carefully micromanaged by the benevolent A.I.

Tails was proud of her. Being put in charge of a project geared to ultimately benefit the good of all fit Maria perfectly. He was proud of her selfless approach to the project and also (once being an amateur technician himself) her engineering skills.

Maria smiled at the fox as he stared at her lustfully. She reached out and touched his white muzzle. "Good morning."

Tails smiled widely. "Morning to you too."

"What’re you thinking about?" Maria asked sleepily and yawned. Tails grinned and growled playfully. He reached out and lightly brushed his hand against her swelling bust that pressed against her dress.

"Oh….that." She smirked. "Haven’t you had enough from yesterday?"

"No…" Tails said with a playful tone. "I never get enough of you." Maria pushed his hand away gently. "Well you’re going to have to wait for a few more hours. Can’t rip up my good dress when I have to be at the relocation party. People will talk. Wonder if I was raped."

"Let them talk." The fox said and rolled on top of her. "You have the attention of a Station Square police officer. You can give me a statement." He pressed his muzzle against her stomach. Maria gently pushed his face up off of her. "I’ll give you one when you come on duty, Officer." She teased. Tails rolled back to his side of the bed and grimaced. "Fun killer."

"Bucket head." Maria retorted. She slid off the bed and moved wayward strands of her hair out of her eyes and walked out of the bedroom, heels clicking against the tile floor, leaving Tails with a mock look of injury. He rose up from the bed and grabbed a piece of his armor. "Hold on.."

Chapter 1

Cyberdyne Systems was quartered within a sprawling glass and steel complex of several warehouses, laboratory buildings and utility substations with an office tower rivaling that of the crumbling Omni Consumer Products tower in Central Station Square. There were street outlets in all four cardinal directions, each blocked off by Cyberdyne Security substations. There were two levels of the human element of Cyberdyne’s security force. The first level, which guarded the outside, was composed of reassigned Station Square police officers and other cops from adjacent areas. The second level, which guarded the inside of all of the Cyberdyne buildings was specially trained private guards.

At the East Entrance, one of the guards detected an incoming RFID blip of a Station Square Police cruiser. It wasn’t one of the old Taurus model TurboCruisers. Instead it was one of the gunmetal gray and black Crown Victoria Interdictors that Cyberdyne Systems paid for and distributed throughout the beleaguered police precincts. Trucks with the old OCP Security Concepts insignia were being repainted, while crates of flak jackets, padded body suits, helmets, guns and ammunition were being loaded up. As the blip slowed near the entrance, the guard in Monitoring triggered the gate which swung open. The Crown Vic turned with flawless precision. It stopped near the guard substation. Another guard came out and did a walk-around of the car and then went back to the driver’s side window and tapped on it.

The tinted window eased down, revealing a fully armored Tails, with a serene Maria sitting beside him. The guard smiled. He was a beefy, easygoing human with eyes that seemed to be hidden under wrinkles and fat. "Morning RoboCop."

"Cy-Fox." Tails corrected automatically. He had a mechanical tone in his voice whenever he was ‘on duty’.

"Right." The guard said. He leaned forward. "Who’s your passenger?" His ID was clipped to his leather jacket, dangling. Avery Holbrooks, former Metro North cop. Miles then turned his head to the right, which caused motors to whine. Then he picked something up off of Maria’s lap and extended the object out the window. The guard took it. It was a Cyberdyne employee-issue tablet computer. Holbrooks took a stylus pen from his pocket and tapped the liquid crystal display. It turned a sedate blue color. Then a transparent box appeared, slowly fading in. It had a recent photograph and annotated file for Maria. Holbrooks squinted and then nodded. "Okay." He handed it back to the fox, who set it back on Maria’s lap. "Enjoy your day Miss Robotnik." He raised his hand and made a thumbs-up sign to the guard station. "RoboCop."

"Cy-Fox." Tails said again, letting a bit of annoyance creep into his tone.

"Sorry." Holbrooks said. He waved for them to proceed. Tails then pressed his foot to the accelerator, easing the Crown Victoria on. Avery Holbrooks then went back towards the guard shack. He sighed and went towards the coffee dispenser.

"What’s up?" the guard at Monitoring said. Holbrooks yawned. "Why’d they make a RoboCop out of a fox? Why couldn’t have been a hedgehog…or an echinda…or another human?"

"I dunno." The other guard said. "Maybe God just smiled down on some poor furry bastard at his hospital bed."
