Miles the Cy-Fox
October 22nd, 2007, 06:14 AM
After the 1993 World Trade Center attack on Earth, a division of the American Central Intelligence Agency established a domestic agency tasked with protecting America from the threat of terrorism. Headquartered in Washington D.C, the Counter Terrorist Unit established field offices in several American cities. After the 2012 bombing of the U.N embassy in the Mobius city of Emerald Grove, CTU was established on Mobius the same way. From its inception on both planets, CTU faced hostility and skepticism from other Federal law enforcement agencies. Despite bureaucratic resistance, CTU has become a major force in the war against terror. Like the Earth arm of CTU after 9/11, a number of early CTU Mobius Section missions were declassified after 3/21.
This is one of them.
Chapter 1
The following takes place between 8 AM and 9 AM.
Miles Christopher Prower, known as Tails to his friends and colleagues, was a Mobius fox, with fur the color of a unique mix of orange and yellow. He had hard, blue eyes that softened whenever he was truly concerned about something, or when he was relaxed.
Right now, he was relaxed.
Prower was the Special Agent in Charge of the Station Square field office for the Earth-Mobius joint Counter Terrorist Unit. He was sitting at his usual spot at a vast wooden table in his kitchen, reading a newspaper. There was a stack of newspapers beside his empty plate, newspapers from other cities, both Earth and Mobius-bound. He folded the paper in half as his plate was taken by the delicate hands of Prower's wife, Maria Rebecca Prower. Maria was the attractive, serene granddaughter of prominent human biologist Professor Gerald Robotnik. She was 5 feet, 6 inches tall with long blond hair and light blue eyes. Maria was wearing a white blouse, which had two buttons undone at the top, which always invited the fox's eyes to stare at her respectable bust.
Maria took the plate over to a range and scooped pancakes off of a skillet, then picked up a ceramic bowl of salad, taking both back to the table, setting them down in front of her husband. The fox put his newspaper on the stack and smiled. "Thank you Becky," he said, with affection pooling into his voice.
Maria rewarded him with one of her well-known smiles. Then she stared at his clothes, and slightly wrinkled her nose. The fox was wearing a dark blue suit with a white shirt and black tie. Pancake syrup stained his right cuff on his shirt and jacket as he picked up his first piece of pancake. Maria licked her index finger and started to scrub at the stains. Miles smiled again, thinly.
Then a series of beeps and buzzes rang out. Tails grimaced and dropped his fork, putting his right hand into the inside of his jacket, removing a cellular phone from a pocket. He stared at the LCD after flipping it open and immediately recognized the number. The CTU field office. He tapped the green Call button.
"Prower." he said, now all business and terse.
"I'm sorry to bother you at breakfast sir, especially on your day off." a nervous female voice said on the other end. It was the field office's Internet Protocol Controller, a pink hedgehog named Amy Rose. She was the gatekeeper between the lower computer and intelligence analysts and the command staff, and she also had some personality issues.
"Never mind that, Amy. What's going down?" He slightly adjusted the phone so that the reciever pointed away from his mouth. "Work." he said quietly to Maria, and pointed to the living room. Maria nodded, then walked away with a bemused look on her face.
"I don't have all the details yet, but Sonic wants you at the office ASAP." Amy said, with a hint of apology. Tails sighed and rubbed at the bangs on his forehead. Sonic was the District Regional Director, a blue hedgehog with a tendancy to cause anyone that he thought was standing in his way some grief. They started in CTU close together and Tails had grown to despise the callous blue puke from District. The hedgehog was being groomed for Administrator at Division in Presidium City, and some expected Prower to move up. The fox however, planned to decline. District seemed to turn once good field and command agents into assholes.
Tails sighed. "All right. I'm coming in. Is there anything on the intel watch?"
"No new threats, but there's the usual movement and tips on small-fry terrorists." Amy said. "Listen. I know you've put in 288 hours non-stop, and I know you need some rest. I could always ask Espio to step in." Espio was the Director of Field Operations, as well as the de facto leader of the TAC team stationed at the field office. He was a chameleon, literally.
Tails shook his head. "No...don't bother. If he wants to pull me in after all this, it has to be important. Not like he'd drag me in for the hell of it."
"You never know these days." Amy said and sighed. The clacking of a keyboard could be heard from her end. Tails nodded. "I'll be there in ten. Thanks Amy." He then shut off the phone, and went over to the living room where Maria was standing near the door, holding a sleek gray travel case. Tails took it and opened it, pulling out his CTU-issue GLOCK 18 Select-Fire automatic pistol. He opened his jacket and pushed the weapon into his concealed shoulder holster after checking to see that it was loaded and safe. Maria then put both arms around his waist and kissed him wetly on the mouth. He returned the kiss.
"Sometimes I wish you were an airline pilot instead of a Homeland agent." she sighed. That was the fox's civilian cover, as an agent for the Department of Homeland Security. He had business cards, IDs and even a dummy-office from DHS to vouch for it. He even went to DHS sometimes to actually put in some hours.
"I was made to save the world, not to fly around it in circles." the fox said, and chuckled. He opened the door and began to walk out. walk out. Maria then called out. "Chris!"
Miles turned. "Yeah?"
"I love you."
He smiled again. "I love you too, baby."
This is one of them.
